ChatGPT: pricing, free plan, rights and setup

OpenAI's general AI assistant for writing, research, analysis, images and custom GPTs. Best for: all-purpose drafting, research and analysis.

Contents

What it's for

It's the general-purpose assistant with the most features in one place: chat, files, images, voice, deep research and Codex. That makes it the default first tool for most of our hustles.

  • Drafting product descriptions, emails, ad copy and outlines
  • Summarizing research and client documents
  • Brainstorming hooks, titles and names
  • Building custom GPTs for repeat workflows

Free plan in real output

Unlimited everyday text chats (subject to abuse guardrails). Uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and Codex are 'limited'. Free context window for GPT Instant: 27K tokens, about 12 pages of input.

  • Text drafting: unlimited everyday chats, so a free account can draft every product description or email you need.
  • Long documents: the free input maximum is about 12 pages of text per message (Go and Plus: about 40 pages; reasoning models about 320). A 60-page client PDF has to be split into 5+ chunks on Free.
  • Images and deep research: OpenAI only says 'limited' and publishes no number, so plan on Plus if you depend on them daily.

Cost at your stage

PlanMonthly cost
Month 1 (testing, low volume)Free$0
Month 12 (working volume)Plus$20

Break-even: Plus at $20/mo pays for itself if it saves you about 1 billable hour a month at $20/hour or more.

Month-12 plan is our estimate of what a solo seller at steady weekly output needs, based on the plan limits above. Costs exclude tax.

Commercial use and output rights

You own or may use output commercially

“Subject to your compliance with these Terms, you (a) retain your ownership rights in Input and (b) own the Output. We hereby assign to you all our right, title, and interest, if any, in and to Output.”

Your data and AI training: Consumer chats can be used to train models unless you opt out: 'If you do not want us to use your Content to train our models, you can opt out by following the instructions in this article.' (Terms of Use)

This is a summary of public terms, not legal advice. Terms change; re-read the clause before client work.

Hidden costs and gotchas

  • Output may not be unique: the terms warn that 'other users may receive similar output'. Don't sell generated text as exclusive.
  • Go 'may include ads' according to the pricing page.
  • Free, Go and Plus are for individuals. Business plans start at 2 users (pricing FAQ).
  • Monthly billing only for Go and Plus; annual plans are only for Business and Enterprise (pricing FAQ).

First-hour setup

  1. Create a free account at chatgpt.com and turn on two-factor authentication.
  2. Open Settings → Data controls and decide whether to allow your chats to be used for training (turn it off for client work).
  3. Under Personalization, add custom instructions: your business, audience and tone.
  4. Create a Project for each client or product so files and chats stay separate.
  5. Run a real task (for example 10 product descriptions), then edit and fact-check the output before you use it.

Head to head: ChatGPT vs Claude

Learning difficulty

1/5: Plain chat; anyone can get value in the first session. Getting reliable results takes prompt habits and fact-checking, not technical skill.

When not to use it

Skip it for final facts, figures or citations you won't check. For long documents, Claude and NotebookLM keep more of the source in view.

Cheaper or free alternatives:

  • Claude: Long documents, careful writing and code (yes free plan)
  • Gemini: Google Workspace users (yes free plan)
  • Microsoft Copilot: Word, Excel and Outlook users (yes free plan)
  • Perplexity: Fast cited research (yes free plan)
