Step by step

3 of 6 steps are checked against official docs, 3 are our advice. Menu names are quoted from the linked docs as of the date shown; apps change, so follow the doc if what you see differs.

  1. Map the manual process first

Write down each step the client does by hand, who does it and how often. Automate the most frequent painful step first.

Our advice. No specific menus involved.

  2. Build a first scenario in Make

Make's tutorial watches a Google Sheet for new rows and sends a Slack message for each. A scenario is a series of modules; each team can create up to 100 scenarios a day, each up to 2 MB.

  3. Or build it in n8n

Select Personal in the left menu, then Create workflow to open the canvas. n8n's quickstart takes about 15 minutes and needs no API keys.

  4. Or build a Zap

A Zap is a trigger plus one or more actions. Map fields from earlier steps so each run uses that event's data.

Source: Zapier Help: What is a Zap, read 20 October 2026

  5. Add error alerts and a run log

Send yourself an alert when a run fails and keep a log the client can check.

Our advice. No specific menus involved.

  6. Hand over documentation

One page: what runs, when, and what to do if it breaks.

Our advice. No specific menus involved.

Common mistakes

  • Building on your own account, then struggling to hand it over. Agree whose account it runs on first.
  • No error alerts, so failures go unnoticed for weeks.
  • Billing hourly when the value is hours saved every week.

How to get your first customer

  1. Automate something in your own business and record a 2-minute walkthrough.
  2. Offer one local business a fixed-price fix for its most annoying task.
  3. List one specific automation on Upwork or Fiverr rather than "automation services".
