Free plan in real output

Free to join. Upwork takes a Freelancer Service Fee of 0% to 15% per contract; the fee is locked in once a proposal, offer or contract is sent.

  • Upwork's own example: to take home $20/hr at a 10% fee, charge $22.22/hr; 12 hours bills the client $266.64 and you net $239.98.
  • The fee can differ from contract to contract, so check it on each job before you price.

Cost at your stage

PlanMonthly cost
Month 1 (testing, low volume)Free$0
Month 12 (working volume)Free$0

Break-even: No fixed cost; the fee (0–15%) comes out of each contract.

Month-12 plan is our estimate of what a solo seller at steady weekly output needs, based on the plan limits above. Costs exclude tax.

Commercial use and output rights

Not a content generator. A marketplace; who owns delivered work is set by Upwork's terms and your contract.

Your data and AI training: Not applicable.

This is a summary of public terms, not legal advice. Terms change; re-read the clause before client work.

Hidden costs and gotchas

  • Proposals cost Connects, which are sold separately; we couldn't load Upwork's pricing page to confirm current Connect prices (bot check).
  • The fee is per contract and isn't the same on every job.

First-hour setup

  1. Write a profile around one specific service.
  2. Add 2–3 portfolio pieces that match it.
  3. Send a few tailored proposals a day to small, recent jobs.
  4. Check the service fee shown on each job before quoting.
  5. After 5 good reviews, raise your rate.
