Free plan in real output

Limited AI usage, agent requests and chat requests. Cursor doesn't publish exact numbers on the page.

  • The free tier can't be converted into a fixed number of features built; test it on a real repo.
  • Plus ($8) only runs Grok models. Third-party models are billed separately by usage on Premium and up.

Cost at your stage

PlanMonthly cost
Month 1 (testing, low volume)Plus$8
Month 12 (working volume)Premium$30

Break-even: Premium at $30/mo pays for itself if it saves about 1 hour of development a month.

Month-12 plan is our estimate of what a solo seller at steady weekly output needs, based on the plan limits above. Costs exclude tax.

Commercial use and output rights

Not a content generator. Code you write with it is yours under its terms; check client contracts on AI-assisted code.

Your data and AI training: Not quoted here.

This is a summary of public terms, not legal advice. Terms change; re-read the clause before client work.

Hidden costs and gotchas

  • Plus is Grok-only. If you rely on other model makers, you need Premium and pay those models at API list price.
  • The plans bundle X (Twitter) Premium features such as reduced ads and reply boost, which you pay for whether or not you use them.

First-hour setup

  1. Install Cursor and open your project.
  2. Add rules describing your stack and style.
  3. Ask the agent for a small change and review the diff.
  4. Run tests after every agent edit.
  5. Commit often so you can roll back.

Learning difficulty

3/5: You still need to understand code to review what the agent writes.

When not to use it

Not for people who won't read the code; bugs ship silently. Lovable or Bolt suit non-coders for prototypes.

Cheaper or free alternatives:

  • GitHub Copilot: Inline code suggestions in your existing editor (yes free plan)
  • Claude Code: Agentic coding from the terminal (no free plan)
  • Windsurf: A Cursor alternative (yes free plan)
  • Replit: Building and hosting an app entirely in the browser (yes free plan)
