What a finished minute costs you
A minute of narration is about 150 words, or roughly 900 characters. Client work needs retakes, so assume you generate about twice the final runtime. Our estimates Estimate:
ElevenLabs Creator: $22 / ~121 generated minutes ≈ $0.18 per generated minute
with 2× retakes ≈ $0.36 per finished minute
Murf API (Gen2): $0.03 per 1,000 characters × 0.9 ≈ $0.03 per generated minute
with 2× retakes ≈ $0.05 per finished minute
Murf Creator (Studio): $29 / 120 minutes ≈ $0.24 per generated minute
The tool is not your main cost; your time is. Choosing voices, fixing pronunciation, timing to picture and checking quality takes far longer than generating. In our AI voiceover service note we estimate 15–20 minutes of work per finished minute.
What clients pay
The human benchmark: the Global Voice Acting Academy rate guide puts non-broadcast e-learning narration at about $30–$55 per finished minute, per a 2026 summary (Voicecrafters) Self-reported. AI voiceover sells below that, and there's no reliable public data on how far below. If you sell through Fiverr (paid link), it keeps 20% of each order.
Example Estimate: 6-minute orders at $15 per finished minute are $90 each, or $72 after Fiverr's 20%. Reaching $2,000 a month takes about 28 Fiverr orders, or three or four retainer clients sending regular batches.
Where AI narration is allowed (audiobooks)
This matters more than which tool you pick.
- ACX (Audible): not by default. ACX's audio submission requirements, read 20 Oct 2026, say: "Your submitted audiobook must be narrated by a human unless otherwise authorized. Unauthorized use of text-to-speech, AI, or automated recordings in ACX titles is prohibited." The same page says Audible "is working to accept third-party TTS content," with no date. ACX also runs an invite-only US beta that lets narrators create replicas of their own voices.
- KDP Virtual Voice: Amazon's own voices only. Eligible KDP authors can turn an ebook into an audiobook with Amazon's synthetic narration, which is labeled for listeners. You can't upload ElevenLabs or Murf audio through it. (Amazon's help page didn't load for us; this is as summarized by AudioPod's platform review, checked 24 Sep 2026.) See Audiobook narration with AI voices.
- Other stores and aggregators have their own rules, and some accept AI narration only if it's labeled. Check each one before narrating a full book.
Which to choose
- Choose ElevenLabs if you're testing demand, want the cheapest commercial license ($6), need voice cloning on a budget, or also do dubbing. The same credits cover dubbing.
- Choose Murf if you produce regular corporate, training or explainer narration and prefer a fixed number of voice hours a month in a studio editor.
- Either way: never deliver client work from a free plan, get written consent before cloning anyone's voice, and tell clients the voice is AI.
There's also money in the other direction: ElevenLabs pays people whose voices are used from its Voice Library. See License your voice on ElevenLabs. For a four-tool comparison including WellSaid and Speechify, see Best AI voice tools for voiceover side hustles and ElevenLabs vs Murf.
FAQ
Can I use ElevenLabs free plan audio commercially?
No. ElevenLabs' terms say free users "may only use the Services for non-commercial purposes." Commercial use starts with the $6/month Starter plan (checked 20 Oct 2026).
Can I sell voiceovers made with Murf?
Yes. Murf's terms say "You can use Murf created voices for commercial purposes," but you may not resell Murf's voice library itself or use Murf voices to train AI models.
Is ElevenLabs or Murf cheaper?
ElevenLabs is cheaper to start: its commercial Starter plan is $6/month, against Murf's Creator plan at $29/month ($19 billed yearly). For high volume through an API, Murf's per-character API pricing ($0.01–$0.03 per 1,000 characters) can work out cheaper.
Can I publish an AI-narrated audiobook on Audible?
Not through ACX unless Audible authorizes it. ACX's rules prohibit unauthorized text-to-speech and AI narration. Amazon's own KDP Virtual Voice is the exception, and it uses Amazon's voices, not ElevenLabs or Murf.
How much can you earn doing AI voiceover?
There's no reliable public data on AI voiceover earnings. Human e-learning narration benchmarks run about $30–$55 per finished minute, and AI work sells below that. Our example of $15 per finished minute needs about 28 Fiverr orders a month to reach $2,000.
