How Voice Library payouts work
We read ElevenLabs' Voice Library Addendum, its help article What are Voice Actor Payouts? and its payouts guide on 20 Oct 2026. The rules that matter:
- You need a Professional Voice Clone. Professional cloning is available on the Creator plan and above, and ElevenLabs recommends about 2 hours of clean recordings of your voice alone.
- Only paid users' usage earns. The addendum says "in no case will Rewards be provided for use of your User Voice Model by a Free User."
- The rate depends on factors ElevenLabs sets: the pricing tier of the people using your voice, how many characters they generate, and the notice period you choose. A longer notice period can earn a higher rate, but your voice stays usable for longer after you withdraw it. Notice periods run from immediate removal up to two years.
- Custom rates are gone for new voices. ElevenLabs' Voice Library docs call custom rates "a legacy feature that is no longer available for newly shared" voices.
- Getting paid. Payouts go through Stripe Connect, usually once you pass a $10 threshold (higher in some countries), and you must keep an active paid subscription (Starter or above) to receive them.
The royalty math
ElevenLabs' guide gives the default as "around $0.03 per 1,000 characters", which it says is roughly 90 seconds of speech, and a 10-minute YouTube script (about 9,000 characters) at about $0.27 Verified.
Default rate: $0.03 per 1,000 characters
1 finished minute: ~600–900 characters → about $0.02–$0.03
To earn $100 a month: ~3.3 million paid characters of use
(≈ 370 ten-minute scripts by paying users)
The last two lines are our arithmetic from ElevenLabs' rate, not a reported figure Estimate. Whether your voice reaches that volume depends on whether paying users find and keep using it, which ElevenLabs doesn't publish data on.
What people report. In total, ElevenLabs says voice creators had earned over $22M by May 2026, up from $11M in November 2025 (ElevenLabs) Verified. That's spread across every shared voice, and ElevenLabs doesn't publish a typical figure per voice. Its payouts guide cites a Reddit user who earned $200 in a month from one voice and a blogger who made $1,000 over five months with two voices Self-reported. Those are ElevenLabs' chosen examples, not typical results. Threads such as "3 months in the Voice Library and less than $46 earned" on r/ElevenLabs show the more common experience. We couldn't verify either side, so we don't give a typical monthly figure.
Royalties vs selling voiceover to clients
| Voice Library royalties | Client voiceover service | |
|---|---|---|
| What you're paid for | Characters other people generate with your voice | Finished, directed narration delivered to a client |
| Rate | ~$0.03 per 1,000 characters (default) Verified | Our assumption: $10–$25 per finished minute Estimate |
| Human benchmark | None | GVAA guide: about $30–$55 per finished minute for non-broadcast e-learning, via a 2026 summary |
| Effort after setup | None | About 15–20 minutes of your work per finished minute early on Estimate |
| Control | ElevenLabs sets the rate; you set the notice period and moderation | You set the price and the clients |
The comparison in one line: one finished minute sold to a client at our assumed $15 is worth roughly as much as 500 minutes of paid library use at the default rate (our arithmetic) Estimate. The library pays you while you sleep, but at a rate built for volume. Our full pricing math is in the AI voiceover service note.
When the library is worth doing
- You'd make a Professional Voice Clone anyway, for your own channel or client work, so sharing it costs little extra.
- Your voice fills a gap: an accent, language or tone that creators search for and can't find. ElevenLabs' guide says niche voices are the ones that keep earning.
- You're comfortable with the licence. Anyone with a paid plan can use your voice for commercial work you'll never see. Turn on live moderation if you want ElevenLabs to screen requests in prohibited categories, and choose the notice period deliberately, because you can lengthen it later but not shorten it.
Skip it if you were hoping for a replacement for paid voice work, or if you don't want your voice in content you can't review.
FAQ
How much does the ElevenLabs Voice Library pay?
The default rate is about $0.03 per 1,000 characters, according to ElevenLabs' payouts guide, checked 20 Oct 2026. Only usage by paid users counts, and ElevenLabs sets the exact rate based on users' plan tiers, volume and your notice period.
Why am I earning so little from the Voice Library?
At $0.03 per 1,000 characters, a voice needs millions of characters of paid use a month to earn meaningful money. Free users' usage earns nothing, and most library voices compete with many similar ones.
Can I still set a custom rate?
Not for newly shared voices. ElevenLabs' documentation describes custom rates as a legacy feature that is no longer available for new voices.
Do I need a paid ElevenLabs plan to get paid?
Yes. You need the Creator plan or above to make a Professional Voice Clone, and ElevenLabs' help center says you must keep an active paid subscription to receive payouts, which go through Stripe Connect once you pass the threshold (usually $10).
