Bookkeeping with AI, by the numbers

$400 retainers vs $25/hour, 3 hustles under $100, and a prompt that argues back.

AgentHustles ResearchPublished

Welcome to the first weekly research note from AgentHustles. Each week we take one way of earning with AI tools apart: what it costs to start, how long until the first dollar, and what a typical month looks like a year in. Every figure is labeled Verified, Self-reported or Estimate (what the labels mean), and we'd rather tell you an idea is weak than sell you on it.

This week's deep dive: bookkeeping with AI tools

AI has automated the part of bookkeeping that clients never valued: typing in transactions. What's left is reconciling accurately, catching problems early and explaining the numbers in plain language. That's still worth a monthly retainer.

The insight that matters: price by scope, not by the hour. Upwork puts median freelance bookkeeper rates at $11–$25 an hour. A small service business with about 150 transactions a month might take 3–4 hours to close with bank feeds and AI-assisted categorisation. At a $400 monthly retainer, that's $100–$133 an hour effective. Billed at $25 an hour, the same hours across five such clients earn $450 a month.

The hard parts: know where bookkeeping ends and tax advice begins, treat every AI categorisation as a suggestion to review, and never put client data into consumer AI tools without permission. The best first clients come through CPAs and enrolled agents, who already need clean books.

3 hustles under $100 to start

AI headshots and photo editing. $0–$100 to start, first dollar in 1–2 weeks, typical month 12 of $800–$2,500 (estimate). Consumer apps are cheap and everywhere, so the real business is teams: a 25-person company that wants consistent headshots without organising a photoshoot. Research note

AI UGC-style ad creatives. $0–$100 to start, first dollar in 3–6 weeks, typical month 12 of $2,000–$5,000 (estimate). Brands need many ad variants. Sell demonstrations and explainers, and never fake customer testimonials. Research note

Résumé and cover letter service. $0–$100 to start, first dollar in 1–4 weeks, typical month 12 of $1,500–$4,000 (estimate). Job seekers aren't short of words; they're short of judgment about what to claim and what to cut. Specialise by industry or career change. Research note

Tool spotlight: speech-to-text APIs

We have no affiliate relationship here. The point is the economics. OpenAI's transcription API lists $0.0045 per audio minute, so a one-hour podcast costs about 27 cents to draft. Rev still charges customers $1.99 per minute for human transcription. That gap is a business, but only if you sell what the API gets wrong: names, jargon, speaker labels, timing and caption files that pass accessibility review. If you're pricing transcription work, start from the accuracy you guarantee, not the minutes you process. Transcription research note
